Check before you climb

Conic Hill weather

Conditions can change quickly between Balmaha, the open hillside and the summit ridge.

A short walk can still involve wind, rain, cold and poor visibility. Use this guide for planning judgement—not as a live forecast.

Check more than the village forecast

Forecasts for Balmaha may not fully represent exposed higher ground. Wind and visibility can matter as much as rain. Consider the whole period of the walk, remember forecasts contain uncertainty, and check recent observations and official warnings where available.

  • A hill or mountain forecast that considers higher, more exposed ground
  • A local forecast for the Balmaha area
  • Official weather warnings for the period of your visit
  • Sunrise and sunset times for your date

Exposure along the route

Conditions overview

Wind, temperature, visibility and surface conditions may feel different as the route becomes more exposed. This is a planning idea—not a live reading.

How conditions affect the walk

Plain-language guidance for common hill weather. None of this replaces a current forecast or your judgement on the day.

Wind changes the walk

Exposed sections may feel substantially windier than sheltered areas. Wind can affect balance, comfort and temperature, and gusts matter. Consider turning back if conditions feel unsafe.

There is no single wind-speed number that makes the walk suitable for everyone.

Rain and conditions underfoot

Stone steps and uneven ground may become slippery. Waterproof clothing can improve comfort but does not remove risk. Prolonged rain may change surface conditions, and wet weather may increase the time required. Protect phones and essential items.

Visibility and cloud

The famous view may disappear in low cloud. Reduced visibility can make navigation and terrain judgement harder. Do not rely solely on following other people—turning back may be appropriate.

Temperature and exposure

Temperature and wind chill can feel different away from Balmaha, and conditions may change during a two-to-three-hour outing. A warm layer remains sensible even when the village feels mild. Season and personal circumstances matter.

Leave enough daylight

The walk commonly takes approximately 2–3 hours. Allow time for stops, slower progress and unexpected delays. Check sunrise and sunset for the correct date. A phone torch is not a substitute for a sensible start time and preparation.

This page does not calculate daylight for your date—check sunrise and sunset separately.

Seasonal guidance

General patterns only—not fixed month-by-month guarantees. No season is universally “best.”

  • Spring

Variable weather, cool exposed conditions and changing ground conditions.

  • Summer

Longer daylight does not guarantee dry, warm or calm conditions.

  • Autumn

Shortening days, wet surfaces and rapidly changing weather require planning.

  • Winter

Ice, short daylight and strong wind can make a simple walk much less pleasant—and sometimes unwise. If you’re not equipped for winter hill conditions, leave it for a better day.

Should I walk today?

A simple sense-check—not a score or traffic-light rating.

If it isn’t a good day for it, turning round is the right call.

It’s usually fine to go if

  • the forecast and official advice are suitable
  • you have appropriate clothing and footwear
  • you have enough daylight
  • you feel capable of the conditions
  • you have a plan for turning back

Consider another day if

  • wind affects balance or control
  • visibility deteriorates
  • surfaces feel unsafe
  • anyone in the group becomes cold, tired or distressed
  • conditions differ materially from expectations
